The majority of ICR employees are directly engaged in research, in scientific or clinical roles. Our faculty members all have significant track records in research and run teams within our eight scientific divisions. We also have senior staff scientists who may run part of a team, specialise in a particular area of research within a team or work as part of a scientific service. Teams also include postdoctoral training fellows and staff scientists, and a number of specialist research roles such as bioinformaticians.
The ICR sets aside some roles especially for clinicians. Our clinical fellow roles are practising clinicians who have been given protected time for scientific research in order to develop their research careers.
The ICR employs a network of scientific officers and laboratory managers to support our researchers. These come from a variety of backgrounds and may hold responsibility for managing scientific projects, people, resources and budgets. Many are scientifically trained to PhD level, while others hold a first degree in a scientific discipline and may also hold professional management qualifications.
Laboratory managers most often come from a scientific background and have responsibilities for maintaining efficient, tidy and safe laboratories, resolving problems and introducing new systems to improve efficiency within labs. They also organise the delivery and repair of equipment, ensure decontamination procedures are carried out, organise laboratory supplies and manage budgets.
At the ICR we aim to achieve the same high standards in our corporate departments as we do in our research. We offer a variety of professional and administrative roles in areas such as facilities, fundraising, communication, IT, human resources and academic services. Our corporate teams are tailored specifically to meet the needs of a research organisation, and many of our employees in these teams have backgrounds in science, or experience of working with scientists and clinicians. Our specialist finance team is experienced at dealing with research grants, and staff within our Enterprise Unit have the expertise to negotiate complex collaborative agreements between the ICR and pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
