Tatiana McHardy

Dr Tatiana McHardy really enjoys working in a large multidisciplinary drug development team at The Institute of Cancer Research. Her role as a higher scientific officer in Professor Ian Collins’ medicinal chemistry team involves synthesising potential drug molecules, which she then sends to other team members who test these in vitro and in the clinic.

As well as sharing data with colleagues, Tatiana enjoys the opportunity to collaborate with external institutions. “My work involves talking to lots of people and the chance to present findings to other team members and collaborators – I enjoy this very much.”

Tatiana has been at the ICR since 2002, after obtaining her PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Technical University of Lisbon and the University of Liverpool, and working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge. Since joining the institute, she has taken advantage of many career development opportunities on offer.

Tatiana supports the careers of women scientists by sitting on the Athena SWAN board and helped the ICR to achieve a Bronze Athena SWAN Award in 2009. She also represents fellow scientific officers as secretary for the Scientific Officers Association, and is a STEM Ambassador for the ICR.

“As a STEM Ambassador, I go into schools to talk about my research and about biomedical research in general. I like being given the opportunity to communicate my research findings and inspire children with science.

“I am a mother myself – I have two young girls – and I enjoy going to the park or just chilling out with them. I also like reading and going to the cinema.”
